You see the buy and sell rate for AUD on the board before you reach the counter, and it is the same for one hundred dollars as for ten thousand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Polish exchange offices the Australian dollar is a second-tier currency: less common than the euro or the pound, but steady. Three groups ask for it. People leaving on a Work and Holiday visa, who have to show funds in their account. People coming back from Australia with cash left over. And people who still have a polymer note from an old trip. Below you will find the current rate, a conversion table for round amounts, and the things currency calculators leave out: which banknotes we accept, how much cash you may carry into Australia, and why a gold coin with a kangaroo says <em>100 dollars<\/em> on the reverse while costing sixty times that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Australian dollar exchange rate (AUD\/PLN)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The average AUD rate published by the National Bank of Poland on 7 August 2026 is <strong>2.6265 PLN<\/strong> (table no. 152\/A\/NBP\/2026). The Australian dollar sits in table A, so the central bank quotes it every working day, between 11:45 and 12:15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NBP rate is a reference point, not the price at which you exchange cash. The central bank calculates one average rate; an exchange office quotes two, buy and sell, and the spread between them is its margin. Our current AUD rates are on the board at the entrance and in the table on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/\">home page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you check the Australian dollar through the NBP API, or on a site that uses it, you may come across the value <strong>2.9399<\/strong>. That is an archive entry from table no. 10\/B\/NBP\/2004, dated 28 April 2004. We checked the current table B (031\/B\/NBP\/2026) and the Australian dollar is not in it, because since then it has been quoted only in table A. The gap between the archive entry and today\u2019s rate is almost twelve per cent, so a rate that looks better than everywhere else is sometimes simply a rate from twenty-two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Table B is published once a week, on Wednesdays, and collects currencies outside the regularly quoted list. The Australian dollar belongs in table A and that is where it should be looked up.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much is 100 Australian dollars and how many AUD do you get for 100 zloty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversions based on the NBP average rate of 2.6265 PLN from 7 August 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1 AUD is about 2.63 PLN<\/li><li>10 AUD is about 26 PLN<\/li><li>20 AUD is about 53 PLN<\/li><li>50 AUD is about 131 PLN<\/li><li><strong>100 AUD is about 263 PLN<\/strong><\/li><li>200 AUD is about 525 PLN<\/li><li>500 AUD is about 1,313 PLN<\/li><li>1,000 AUD is about 2,627 PLN<\/li><li>5,000 AUD is about 13,133 PLN<\/li><li><strong>10,000 AUD is about 26,265 PLN<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The other way round: 100 PLN is about 38 AUD, 500 PLN about 190 AUD, and 1,000 PLN about 381 AUD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mental arithmetic is easier here than with most exotic currencies: <strong>multiply the amount in Australian dollars by 2.6<\/strong>. Fifty dollars is roughly one hundred and thirty zloty, two hundred dollars roughly five hundred and twenty. Going back the other way, one zloty is just under 0.38 AUD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reference point for Australian prices: the national minimum wage there has been 26.44 AUD an hour since 1 July 2026, which works out at roughly 69 PLN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For an exact figure use the currency calculator on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/\">home page<\/a>. It runs on our current rates rather than the NBP average, so it shows what you actually receive at the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What currency is used in Australia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The currency of Australia is the Australian dollar, ISO code <strong>AUD<\/strong>, symbol <strong>$<\/strong>, written internationally as <strong>A$<\/strong> or AU$ to distinguish it from the American one. One dollar is divided into one hundred cents. The same currency circulates in Australian external territories, among them Christmas Island, the Cocos Islands and Norfolk Island. Nauru uses it as well, and on Kiribati and Tuvalu it circulates alongside local coins struck at one-to-one parity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia went decimal on Monday 14 February 1966, a day known as C-Day, or Conversion Day. The dollar replaced the Australian pound at a fixed conversion: one pound became two dollars, ten shillings became one dollar. The central bank still applies that conversion when someone brings in a pre-decimal note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issuer is the <strong>Reserve Bank of Australia<\/strong>, which began operating on 14 January 1960 under the Reserve Bank Act 1959. Banknotes are printed by Note Printing Australia in Craigieburn near Melbourne, a company wholly owned by the central bank since July 1998. Coins are struck by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, opened in 1965 and the sole producer of circulating coins in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Australian, New Zealand and US dollars are three different currencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a dozen currencies use the $ sign, and it is the most common source of confusion at the counter. Notes turn up here that the customer is convinced are Australian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>New Zealand dollar (NZD)<\/strong> is a separate currency, a separate country and a separate central bank, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. AUD and NZD move in similar patterns, because both economies live on commodities and agricultural exports, but they are not the same money and you cannot spend one on the far side of the Tasman Sea. Both notes are polymer and of similar size, so only the wording settles it: AUSTRALIA or NEW ZEALAND, and a different set of portraits. We do not buy New Zealand dollars; the full list of currencies we handle is on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/wymiana\/\">currency exchange page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>US dollar (USD)<\/strong> is worth roughly half as much again as the Australian one. At NBP rates from 7 August 2026 the US dollar stood at 3.7324 PLN and the Australian dollar at 2.6265 PLN. American notes are paper, green and all the same size; Australian notes come in different colours, grow with the denomination and are made of film. You can only mix them up in a transfer description, not in your hand. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/canadian-dollar-to-pln\/\">Canadian dollar<\/a> belongs to the same commodity-currency family, reacting to oil prices much as the Australian one reacts to iron ore. We quote the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/najlepszy-kurs-dolara-warszawa\/\">US dollar rate<\/a> separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Australian Kangaroo gold coin: the 100 dollar face value is not its price<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The one-ounce Australian Kangaroo gold coin carries the words <em>100 DOLLARS<\/em> on the reverse and costs several thousand zloty. That is neither a minting error nor a sign that the coin is fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coin is struck by <strong>The Perth Mint<\/strong>, wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia and operating since 1899. The 2026 one-ounce Kangaroo has a face value of 100 AUD, a fineness of 99.99 and contains one troy ounce of gold, that is 31.107 g. The silver version carries a face value of 1 AUD at the same fineness and weight. Both are issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, and the design and mintage of every issue must be approved in advance by the Australian Treasury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mint says so plainly: face values on coins like these are, in its own words, <em>nowhere near<\/em> the price of an ounce of metal, because they are <em>non-circulating legal tender<\/em>, official coins that are not meant to be spent in a shop. The arithmetic is simple. A face value of 100 AUD came to about 263 PLN at the NBP rate of 7 August 2026. An ounce of gold at the NBP price from the same day, 512.07 PLN per gram of fine gold, came to about <strong>15,900 PLN<\/strong>, more than sixty times as much. The price of the coin follows the metal, not the face value, and that is how we value it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kangaroo reverse changes with each year of issue. The 2026 edition carries a <em>40<\/em> privy mark marking forty years of the Australian Nugget series, which debuted in 1986 and had its official launch in Sydney in April 1987. The same mint produces the silver Kookaburra, issued since 1990, whose one-ounce version carries a face value of 5 AUD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not handle bullion coins at the currency counter, because they are not circulating cash. We value and buy them as part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/gold-buying-warsaw\/\">gold buying<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agkantor.pl\/en\/skup-monet-warszawa\/\">coin buying<\/a> service, and valuation on the spot is free. Worth knowing: the Perth Mint refines around 71 per cent of Australia\u2019s newly mined gold and holds LBMA Good Delivery status, so the provenance of the metal in these coins is unambiguous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What drives the Australian dollar against the zloty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AUD\/PLN is not quoted directly on the international market. The rate is a <strong>cross rate<\/strong>, calculated through the US dollar. That is how the NBP arrives at it too: the bank fixes EUR\/PLN at 11:00 and derives the remaining table A rates from cross rates taken from Reuters and Bloomberg. The practical consequence is that AUD\/PLN moves for two reasons at once, because the Australian dollar shifts against the US dollar and the zloty shifts against it as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reserve Bank of Australia calls its own currency a <em>commodity currency<\/em>. Australia ranks first in the world in iron ore production, with 38 per cent of global output, and third in gold production; by reserves it ranks first in both. Iron ore exports alone came to 116 billion Australian dollars in 2024\/25, and total resource and energy exports reached 385 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second pillar is China, which accounts for 25 per cent of all Australian trade. Australian exports to China reached 196 billion Australian dollars in 2024, or 30 per cent of the country\u2019s entire export. So when Chinese data comes in below expectations, iron ore futures fall and the Australian dollar weakens the same day. For anyone planning an exchange that is a concrete pointer: the AUD rate reacts to news from Beijing faster than to anything happening in Canberra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to what many rankings repeat, the Australian dollar is not the fifth or sixth currency in the world. In the latest Bank for International Settlements survey, conducted in April 2025 and published on 30 September 2025, it ranks <strong>seventh<\/strong>, down one place, overtaken by the yuan and the Swiss franc. Its share of foreign exchange turnover is around 6 per cent. The AUD\/USD pair itself remains sixth in the world and accounts for roughly 5 per cent of all transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Australian dollar in 2025 and 2026: from a five-year low to a rebound<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On 8 April 2025 the Australian dollar fell to <strong>0.5960<\/strong> US dollars, its lowest in five years. It happened immediately after the announcement of US tariffs, as the market began pricing in weaker world trade and therefore weaker demand for Australian commodities. The currency still closed 2025 at 0.6673, around eight per cent higher than it started the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2026 the direction reversed. On 13 May the rate reached <strong>0.7258<\/strong>, the highest in almost four years. On 7 August 2026 the official 4pm rate published by the Reserve Bank of Australia stood at 0.7029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason for the strength is unusual by world standards: <strong>the Australian central bank is raising rates while most others are cutting<\/strong>. After an easing cycle that took the cash rate down to 3.60 per cent in August 2025, three consecutive increases followed, on 4 February, 18 March and 6 May 2026, bringing it back to <strong>4.35 per cent<\/strong>. In its June 2026 statement the bank explicitly links the stronger currency to those decisions. The tightening is a response to inflation, which picked up markedly in the second half of 2025, partly on the back of more expensive oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For historical perspective: the record for the Australian dollar is above 1.10 US dollars, set in 2011 at the peak of the commodity boom driven by Chinese investment. Those levels are a long way off today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What matters at the counter is AUD\/PLN rather than AUD\/USD, but it is worth knowing where the discrepancies between sources come from. The NBP rates of 7 August 2026, 2.6265 PLN for the Australian dollar and 3.7324 PLN for the US dollar, imply AUD\/USD at 0.7037, one tenth of a per cent above the official Australian rate from the same day. The gap comes from the timing of the fix: the NBP calculates its rates at around 11:00 Warsaw time, long after the Sydney session has closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buying and selling Australian dollars in Warsaw<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We buy and sell Australian dollars in cash, with no commission. The AUD buy and sell rates are published on the board in the office and in the table on the home page. The exchange takes a few minutes and needs no appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Australian dollar is not one of our front-line currencies, so for a larger amount, or for particular denominations, for instance if you need hundreds only, call a day ahead on <strong>+48 791 901 979<\/strong> and we will have the cash ready at an agreed time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one rate regardless of the amount. We do not tier it and we do not add transaction commission. What you see on the board is what you get at the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Australian banknotes we accept<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Five denominations circulate: 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars. The current Next Generation Banknote series entered circulation in stages: 5 dollars on 1 September 2016, 10 dollars on 20 September 2017, 50 dollars on 18 October 2018, 20 dollars on 9 October 2019 and 100 dollars on 29 October 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who appears on the notes: the five carries Queen Elizabeth II and Parliament House, the ten the poet Banjo Paterson and the writer Mary Gilmore, the twenty the businesswoman Mary Reibey and the Reverend John Flynn, founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The fifty bears David Unaipon, the first published Aboriginal author and an inventor, and Edith Cowan, the first woman in an Australian parliament. The hundred carries the soprano Nellie Melba and General John Monash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We buy notes of the current series in all five denominations. <strong>We do not accept coins<\/strong>, because the cost of processing them exceeds their value, so Australian small change is best spent before you leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older series are a separate matter and both sides of it are worth knowing. The Reserve Bank of Australia states plainly that all previous issues of Australian banknotes retain legal tender status, including the paper notes from before 1992. The same bank adds that shops and members of the public may be reluctant to accept them if they do not recognise the design, and that old notes are redeemed at face value by the central bank and by most commercial banks. We buy only the current series: an older note is best exchanged in Australia, not in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Polymer banknotes are an Australian invention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An Australian banknote is not paper and does not behave like paper. Worth knowing before you put one on the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work began in 1968, when the Reserve Bank of Australia asked the national science agency CSIRO to protect the newly decimalised currency against counterfeiting. The result was the 10 dollar note issued in January 1988 for the Australian bicentenary, the first banknote in the world printed on polymer film with a diffractive security device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The full polymer series came in stages: 5 dollars in July 1992, 10 in November 1993, 20 in October 1994, 50 in October 1995 and 100 in May 1996. With that last note Australia became the first country to convert its entire currency from paper to polymer. Several dozen countries have since followed, including the United Kingdom and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The practical difference is that the note does not absorb water, does not fray at the folds and will survive a wash in a trouser pocket, but it creases permanently and melts at high temperature. We assess it differently from a paper note: what counts most is whether the transparent window is intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A separate story is the <strong>new 5 dollar note<\/strong>. In February 2023 the central bank decided it would not carry a monarch, but a design honouring the culture of the First Australians; a theme was chosen in March 2025. As of August 2026 no artist, no design and no issue date have been announced, and the current five with the portrait of Elizabeth II is still being issued and will remain valid after the new one appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much cash you can bring into and out of Australia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no ceiling on the amount. AUSTRAC, the Australian anti-money-laundering agency, states plainly that travellers may carry an unlimited amount of cash into and out of Australia. There is, however, a duty to declare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must declare <strong>10,000 Australian dollars or the equivalent in another currency<\/strong>, about 26,265 PLN at the NBP rate of 7 August 2026. The threshold applies to the combined value of all monetary instruments carried, regardless of currency; the rule in this wording has applied since 17 June 2022. The Cross-Border Movement form is handed to an Australian Border Force officer at the border and the report goes to AUSTRAC. Cheques, travellers cheques and bearer bonds are declared if an officer asks about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Splitting an amount between family members or fellow travellers to stay under the threshold is a criminal offence. AUSTRAC calls it structuring and separately warns against repeatedly crossing the border with sums just below the limit. The penalty for failing to declare is 12 penalty units for an individual and 60 for a body corporate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cash or card: how people pay in Australia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to intuition, cash in Australia is not disappearing. In the Consumer Payments Survey run by the central bank in the autumn of 2025, cash accounted for about <strong>15 per cent<\/strong> of the number of payments, against 13 per cent in 2022. For in-person payments the figure is 19 per cent. Three quarters of respondents carry cash in their wallet, with a median of around 65 dollars, and one in three admits that losing access to cash would cause them serious difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1 January 2026 two industry codes have required businesses to accept cash, but their scope is narrower than the headlines suggest. They cover supermarkets and fuel retailers only, in-person transactions up to 500 dollars and the hours between 7:00 and 21:00, with an exemption for small businesses turning over less than 10 million dollars a year. Penalties for non-compliance have applied only since 1 July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Card surcharges are still legal and widespread in Australia. The central bank has decided to remove them, but the change takes effect on <strong>1 October 2026<\/strong> and covers eftpos, Mastercard and Visa. American Express and Diners Club are not included, so if you pay with one of those the surcharge may remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ATMs are becoming scarcer: 23,769 in June 2024, more than a quarter fewer than at the peak in late 2016. Since 2009 a direct charging model has applied, under which the ATM owner charges the cardholder directly and must display the fee on screen before you confirm, with the option to cancel at no cost. That screen is worth reading before you press confirm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A separate trap is DCC, the offer to settle a transaction in your home currency instead of Australian dollars. Under Mastercard rules, DCC must not be applied automatically, the terminal has to show both amounts and the conversion rate used, and staff may not steer you towards it. The answer that is almost always cheaper: settle in AUD, the local currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tipping in Australia is entirely voluntary, which the Australian tax office confirms by treating a tip as something given outside the price of the service. Hospitality staff earn the full statutory rate, since the national minimum wage has been 26.44 dollars an hour from 1 July 2026. It is a different situation from the United States and a different expectation of the guest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One detail that catches people out on their first cash payment: the 1 and 2 cent coins were withdrawn from circulation in February 1992, so cash amounts are rounded to the nearest five cents, up or down. There is no rounding on card, and 9.99 dollars is charged to the cent. The 1 and 2 cent coins formally remain legal tender, although in practice nobody uses them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Work and Holiday: how many Australian dollars you need in your account<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most common reason young Poles buy Australian dollars from us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poland and Australia signed the Work and Holiday arrangement in Warsaw on 7 October 2014. It concerns the <strong>subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa<\/strong>, granted for twelve months from the date of entry. The conditions: aged 18 to 30 at the time of application, a higher education qualification or at least two completed years of undergraduate study, functional English, and evidence of funds of around <strong>5,000 Australian dollars<\/strong> plus a return ticket or the money to buy one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five thousand Australian dollars came to <strong>about 13,133 PLN<\/strong> at the NBP rate of 7 August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual cap for Poland is 1,500 visas. According to Australian Department of Home Affairs figures for the year ending 30 June 2025, Poles received 677 subclass 462 visas, less than half the allocation. Places are usually available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the record: the funds are evidenced with a bank statement, not with cash in hand. Cash is useful for the first few days, for transport from the airport, a room deposit and shopping before an Australian account is running. A typical order before such a trip is a few hundred dollars in fifties, not the whole amount from the visa application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the exchange works at our counter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exchange takes a few minutes. You come to the counter, say how much you want to exchange and in which direction, and we convert it at the rate on the board. You see the rate before the transaction, not after. For larger sums anti-money-laundering rules apply and we will ask for an identity document. The office operates on the basis of an entry in the NBP register of currency exchange activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Banknotes are checked in a counting machine with an authenticity test.
