The Icelandic krona (ISK) is the official currency of Iceland, issued by Seðlabanki Íslands — the Central Bank of Iceland. At Kantor Argentarii in Warsaw you can exchange it commission-free: we buy and sell ISK banknotes for cash at rates close to the NBP mid-rate.

At the NBP mid rate, 1 ISK = 0.0312 zł (table 181/A/NBP/2026 of 17 September 2026), which means 1 zł = 32.0410 ISK.

How much is 1000, 5000, 10,000 Icelandic krona in złoty
At the NBP mid rate from August 2026 (PLN 0.0302 per unit) 1000 Icelandic krona is about PLN 30, 5000 about PLN 151 and 10,000 about PLN 302. The other way round, PLN 100 buys roughly 3300 krona.

We handle both sides of the transaction. Coming back from Iceland with cash? We buy your krónur at the current buy rate. Heading there? ISK banknotes are available on the spot — no bank pre-order needed. The Icelandic krona is one of the harder currencies to find in Polish exchange offices, so for larger amounts it is worth calling a day ahead to confirm denominations. We deal in banknotes only and do not accept Icelandic coins.
What drives the ISK/PLN rate
The Icelandic krona floats freely and trades on one of the smallest currency markets in Europe — Iceland has fewer than 400,000 residents. A small market means sharper swings: ISK reacts visibly to the tourist season, fish and aluminium export results, and Seðlabanki Íslands interest-rate decisions. Capital controls introduced after the 2008 crisis stayed in place until 2017. The krona has traded freely since, but in nervous markets it can gain or lose ground faster than the euro or the dollar. ISK/PLN is calculated through euro and dollar pairs, so NBP decisions feed into the price as well.
Which Icelandic banknotes we accept
Five denominations are in circulation: 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 krónur. The largest — the 10,000-krona note with the portrait of poet Jónas Hallgrímsson — entered circulation in 2013. The 2000-krona note is the one you will see least often, but we buy all the denominations listed. We do not accept notes from before Iceland’s 1981 currency reform: the krona was redenominated at 100:1, and old issues no longer have face value, only potential collector value. We do not accept damaged, marked or taped notes.
How the exchange works
Check the current rate on our homepage, then come to Grzybowska 61 — a transaction takes a few minutes and no appointment is needed. Bring ID only for larger amounts: under the Polish AML act, transactions of EUR 15,000 equivalent or more require client identification. We operate under an entry in the NBP register of currency exchange offices. Besides currencies, we also run gold buying in Warsaw at the same counter.

Can I pay by card in Iceland, or do I need cash?
Iceland is almost cashless — cards work in shops, petrol stations and most attractions. A small reserve of krónur is still useful for vending machines, public toilets or local markets. For a typical trip, cash worth a few hundred złoty is usually enough.
Can I exchange a 10,000-krona Icelandic banknote?
Yes, we buy all circulating denominations: 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10,000 krónur. The 10,000-krona note has been in circulation since 2013 and regularly reaches us after trips to Iceland. We buy it at the standard rate, with no extra fees.
Do you buy Icelandic coins?

As a rule, no. Iceland belongs to the EEA but not to the European Union or the euro area — the only widely accepted currency is the Icelandic krona. A few tourist venues take euros at their own, usually poor, conversion rate, so it is safer to carry a card and a small amount of ISK.
