Romanian Leu Exchange Rate (RON) – Currency Exchange in Warsaw
The Romanian leu (RON) is the official currency of Romania, issued by Banca Națională a României — the National Bank of Romania. At Kantor Argentarii in Warsaw you can exchange it commission-free: we buy and sell RON banknotes for cash at rates close to the NBP mid-rate.
Our exchange office is at Grzybowska 61, inside the Platinum Towers gallery — a short walk from Rondo Daszyńskiego and the M2 metro. Most clients exchanging lei are travellers heading to Romania — Transylvania, Bucharest or the Black Sea coast — and drivers passing through on the way to Bulgaria or Greece. Romania has been fully part of the Schengen area since January 2025, so there are no land-border checks any more — but payments there are still made in the national currency.

Buying and selling Romanian lei in Warsaw
We handle both sides of the transaction. Coming back from Romania with leftover cash? We buy your lei at the current buy rate. Heading there? RON banknotes are available on the spot — no bank pre-order needed. The leu is stocked by few exchange offices in Warsaw, so for larger amounts it is worth calling a day ahead to confirm denominations. We deal in banknotes only and do not accept Romanian coins (bani).
What drives the RON/PLN rate
The leu operates under a managed float: Banca Națională a României lets the rate move but smooths the swings with interventions, which is why EUR/RON has stayed in a narrow band for years. In practice the leu-to-złoty rate follows EUR/PLN — when the złoty weakens against the euro, it weakens against the leu too. Romanian inflation, the state of public finances and BNR interest-rate decisions feed into the price as well. Romania has been in the European Union since 2007 but has not adopted the euro, and no target date has been set.
Which Romanian banknotes we accept
Eight denominations are in circulation: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 lei. The newest — the 20-lei note with the portrait of Ecaterina Teodoroiu, the first woman on a Romanian banknote — entered circulation in 2021. All of them are polymer: Romania was the first country in Europe to abandon paper banknotes entirely. Polymer notes are hard to tear but can fuse when overheated — damaged notes are priced individually at the counter. We buy all circulating denominations; the 200- and 500-lei notes are the ones we see least. We do not accept old lei (ROL) from before the redenomination of 1 July 2005, when 10,000 old lei were replaced by one new leu — those issues no longer have face value, only potential collector value.
How the exchange works
Check the current rate on our homepage, then come to Grzybowska 61 — a transaction takes a few minutes and no appointment is needed. Bring ID only for larger amounts: under the Polish AML act, transactions of EUR 15,000 equivalent or more require client identification. We operate under an entry in the NBP register of currency exchange offices. Besides currencies, we also run gold buying in Warsaw at the same counter.
Reserve a rate for one hour
You can lock the online rate for 60 minutes — fill in the reservation form on the homepage and mention the online price at the counter. Handy for larger amounts, or when the rate is good and you need time to get here. Reservations are free and non-binding.

Frequently asked questions about exchanging Romanian lei
What is today’s Romanian leu rate at the kantor?
Current buy and sell rates for RON are shown in the rates table on our homepage, updated continuously during opening hours. The counter rate matches the online rate if you mention it, and for larger amounts you can negotiate by phone.
Can I pay by card in Romania, or do I need cash?
Cards work in most shops, restaurants and hotels in the cities. Outside them cash is still the norm: markets, guesthouses, parking and tips. For a typical trip, lei worth a few hundred złoty usually cover the cash side — the rest goes on card.
Can I pay in euros in Romania?
No — the leu is the only widely accepted currency. Hotels and estate agents often quote prices in euros, but payment still goes through in lei at the seller’s own, usually poor, conversion rate. It is safer to carry a card and RON exchanged before you leave Poland.
Do you buy Romanian coins (bani)?
No, we exchange banknotes only. Coins of 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani are best spent in Romania or kept for your next trip. Transport and sorting costs mean exchange offices in Poland do not accept them.
Do you exchange old lei from before 2005?
No. In the redenomination of 1 July 2005, 10,000 old lei (ROL) were replaced by one new leu (RON) and the old banknotes lost their face value — they are worth collector money at most. We buy the current polymer series only.
