How we set the buy and sell rate for the pound

An exchange office buys currency wholesale — from banks or on the currency market — and then sells it to customers with a margin added. The difference between the buy rate (bid) and the sell rate (ask) is the spread. Our spread on the pound is narrow, and the rate is the same for everyone: you do not have to exchange several thousand pounds to get a good price. We are open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 21:00, on Saturdays from 10:00 to 20:00, and on Sundays from 11:00 to 20:00. We operate on-site, so you can exchange pounds in person and on the spot.

Security and transaction verification

We operate legally, on the basis of entry in the register of currency exchange activity kept by the NBP, and we treat customer security as a priority. For transactions equivalent to EUR 15,000 or more, we verify identity against an ID document — a requirement of anti-money-laundering (AML) regulations. The pound sterling — the oldest and one of the strongest currencies

The British pound (GBP, pound sterling) is one of the oldest currencies still in circulation — its history goes back to the 12th century. Alongside the dollar, the euro and the yen, it remains one of the strongest and most traded currencies in the world.

New polymer banknotes (Elizabeth II and Charles III)

Modern pounds are polymer banknotes — more durable and better protected than the old paper ones. Notes bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth II circulate alongside the newer ones with a portrait of King Charles III. Both are legal tender and we exchange them without any problem.

Old, withdrawn pounds (£20 and £50) — do we accept them?

We exchange only current, circulating banknotes. Paper £20 notes (featuring Adam Smith) and £50 notes (featuring James Watt and Matthew Boulton) lost legal tender status on 30 September 2022, and paper £5 and £10 notes had been withdrawn earlier. We do not accept such banknotes. They are not exchanged by the NBP either. Withdrawn pounds can, however, be exchanged indefinitely directly at the Bank of England, in person or by post.

What moves the pound against the złoty

GBP/PLN is driven mainly by the interest rate gap between the Bank of England and the Polish Monetary Policy Council, UK inflation data and the state of the British economy. The pound also reacts to political events in the UK more sharply than most European currencies. The rate moves in both directions, so before a larger exchange check the figure from that day rather than one from last week.
